Ten years ago today I waited tables for the last time. I didn’t know at the time it would be the last time but miracle of miracles it was.

However, it is truly a respectable career. I know so many people my age who are career servers. They own homes, are putting their kids through college, planning for retirement.

And all of the people I know make a fuck ton more money than I do. I know what my staff makes. I can only imagine what servers at busier restaurants are making.

I applaud their ability to show up every day with a smile on their face. To show up and treat hateful people with kindness. To keep their wits about them. To do what they do.

I’m glad I don’t wait tables anymore. Management suits me better.

But don’t ever discount the way a person makes a living.

I certainly don’t.
